A curated list of events taking place in Toronto and on the Internets, with a special focus on those taking place at Ryerson University.
- Journalist Graeme Smith will be on Ryerson campus on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 12:15 for a one-hour talk about his new book The Dogs Are Eating Them Now: Our War in Afghanistan and his work in Afghanistan. The event is in the George Vari Engineering Building, room LG 04. (Note: The event is aimed at Ryerson students. Students should email office.journalism@ryerson.ca to RSVP.)
- World Press Photo: Brookfield Place presents World Press Photo 13, a traveling exhibition of prize-winning entries assembled by World Press Photo, organizers of the world’s largest and most prestigious annual press photography contest. Free until Oct. 21. Info here.
- The Ryerson School of Journalism invites you to celebrate their 60th Anniversary weekend on Oct. 4-5. On Oct. 4 mix and mingle at this cocktail reception, where the Ryerson Journalism Wall of Fame will be unveiled. Tickets ($30-$50) available here. On Oct.5, illustrious alumni from CBC, Toronto Star, Global News, Huffington Post, Globe and Mail and more gather for a series of panels called “Journalism: How It’s Done, Where It’s Headed”. Join former students as they ask: how does a great journalism school stay sharp? Free. More info here.
- Age of Wikileaks (Live blog via Postmedia-Canada.com Network) It was one of the most-talked-about films at the Toronto International Film Festival and now The Fifth Estate, the blockbuster movie about the controversial Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks saga is going into wide release. This chat will discuss Assange, his maverick site and how they changed the dissemination of information in the media age — all set against a backdrop of espionage, international intrigue and political secrets. Panel: Dwayne Winseck, a professor at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication with a cross-appointment at the Institute of Political Economy who has expertise in media regulation and policy, privacy and propaganda; and Paul Levinson, a Fordham University professor who comments widely on social media, news, popular culture and major motion pictures. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
- The Online News Association conference takes place Oct. 17-19 in Atlanta, GA. Although it’s not a Toronto-based event, many Toronto journalists make their way south every year to this excellent meeting of the tech-savvy media minds. Much of it is livestreamed or liveblogged: check http://ona13.journalists.org/ for real-time coverage.
- On Oct. 22, former Toronto Star humour columnist and current novelist Linwood Barclay joins novelist, television producer and journalist Lisa Gabriele and Globe and Mail books editor Jared Bland in this discussion about the journey from journalist to bestselling author of suspense novels. This Canadian Journalism Foundation event will take place at the TMX Broadcast Centre on 130 King. St. W. More details here. These events tend to cost $15-$25 and often sell out.
